The pedagogical method of teaching was effective in the twentieth century; however, it has become less effective in teaching the new generation of students to meet learning objectives in the pre-licensure nursing program. Many students require variety of teaching methods to be successful. One such innovative teaching strategy is the Plate Method which involves looking at interactive ways of placing learning and outcomes on a “plate” depicted by a circle on white board in the classroom to enhance critical thinking and understanding in pre-licensure adult health nursing class......

Making Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) accessible to those at high-risk has challenges. The debate as to who is best qualified to prescribe PrEP is highly controversial. In order to reach men who, have sex with men (MSM), one program in San Francisco developed a nurse-led model of care for clients eligible for PrEP in community health centers [1]. Using a similar model, we proposed the development of a PrEP clinic in a highly populated infections disease clinic in North Carolina. A PrEP protocol was developed and implemented by a doctoral prepared nurse practitioner. The purpose of this manuscript is to report findings from the initiation of this protocol on PrEP knowledge and medication adherence in 2 months when compared to baseline......

Breastfeeding has long been considered as the optimal feeding method for all infants and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends exclusive breastfeeding for at least the first six months [1]. As well, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) agrees that breastfeeding is the best source of nutrition for infants [2] and the World Health Organization (WHO) concurs the exclusive breastfeeding that exclusive breastfeeding is the unequalled infant feeding method for the first six months [3]. Breastfeeding support and education are considered to be key elements of breastfeeding success [2]. Breastfeeding support from health professionals can be effective in influencing a mother’s decision to initiate and maintain breastfeeding Yang et al. [4]. Despite this knowledge, the research indicates that many nursing programs do not inc.....

Non- communicable diseases (NCDs), rather than infectious agents, have become the primary source of illness among Americans. While these diseases have not been infectious or transmittable, they have been considered chronic and preventable. Diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and chronic lung disease have emerged as the most common NCDs [1] (World Health Organization [WHO], 2017). NCDs have been directly related to increased mortality rates of 88% in the United States (US) and 70% across the globe [2] (WHO, 2014). The macro and microeconomic impact associated with NCDs has been substantial. Macroeconomic issues have included increased health care expenditures and lost labor and productivity for businesses and employers. Microeconomic issues have included increased personal costs associated with disease treatment, work-related absente.....

Early marriage defined as any marriage carried out below the age of 18 years before the girl is physically, physiologically, and psychologically ready to carry the responsibilities of marriage and childbearing [1]. Child marriage is a human rights violation and has adverse effects on the future of their girl’s children (overwhelmingly girls) who enter into these marriages, creating an intergenerational cycle of disadvantage [2]. Adverse health consequences of child marriage include poor maternal and reproductive health. Early marriage negatively affects the health and well–being of women and children [3]. It leads to early child-bearing, closed spaced pregnancies, unwanted pregnancy, pregnancy termination, maternal morbidity, and mortality [4]. It also increases the risk of intimate partner violence [5], which further linked to sexual.....

Most people on the outside of the health care profession are not familiar with this new role of the pharmacist. The general public has created a stereotypical pharmacist’s picture as being a person who stands behind a counter, dispenses medicine with some instructions to the respective consumer. Pharmacy practice has changed substantially in recent years. Today’s pharmacists have unique training and expertise in the appropriate use of medications and provide a wide array of patient care services in many different practice settings......

It is well recognized that coronary artery disease and cancer are the result of inflammatory changes, which occur within the tissues of the body-specifically the walls of the coronary arteries (CAD) and within the specific organ (e.g. breast, colon) tissue in question [1-3] and not the blood. Despite this obvious difference between blood and tissue, medical studies looking at the impact of diets and drugs have primarily utilized changes in qualitative or at best semi-quantitative imaging [4-6], weight and blood tests to monitor presumed changes in heart disease and cancer. However, changes in heart disease and cancer cannot be measured through the mere use of blood tests alone, since these blood tests merely tell us what is happening within the blood and not what is happening in the
tissues of the body proper [7,8]. Hence, the persistent.....

The literature depicts many health benefits for both mother and newborn associated with breastfeeding. Although breastfeeding initiation rates have met the goals of Healthy People, the United States lags behind the achievement of optimal exclusive breastfeeding continuation and duration rates. Billions of health care dollars could be saved along with hundreds of lives with improved breastfeeding rates. The purpose of this article was to examine the association between disease prevention, health promotion, and breastfeeding rates. The findings indicated that breastfeeding does offer some maternal and newborn protection against certain diseases and conditions which may be dose dependent, although some diseases and conditions reported mixed reviews and will require additional research. For the newborn, reduced rates of certain respiratory an.....
