I have held various posts in support of nurse undergraduate and post graduate education development in the University of Birmingham stretching over a 30 year period. Within the same time I was research-active in studies including Older people with falls in the community and ‘Health services provisions for older people with stroke’. I was a Senior Fellow in the Gerontological Nursing Programme at the Royal College of Nursing, London (1999-2001) and contributed to National policy, i.e. the Single Assessment Process, and conducted ‘An evaluation of the use of the Registered Nursing Contribution to Care Determination Tool in practice’ (with P Ford, RCN). After a move to Bristol and to the University of the West of England, my research interest in care homes began with the development of a Care Home Learning Network. This was followed by several major projects including: An Evaluation of Funded Nursing Care in England funded by the Department of Health and The evaluation of different models of care in residential homes for older people funded by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. I officially retired in 2012 and since then I have continued to publish my personal research comprising studies of the health and wellbeing of war veterans from the Korean War (1950-53) and the Gulf War (1991). I hold an Honorary appointment as a Senior Research Fellow with the University of Coventry and I am active in supporting the development of aspects of Gerontological Nursing including technology in care homes for older people. Over my working life I have published some 75 articles and 20 research reports.
