Robert J Gatchel received his BA in Psychology, Summa Cum Laude, in 1969 from the State University of New York at Stony Brook, and his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology in 1973 from the University of Wisconsin. He is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP). Dr. Gatchel is currently a Distinguished Professor of the Department of Psychology, College of Science, as well as the Nancy P & John G Penson Endowed Professor of Clinical Health Psychology, at The University of Texas at Arlington. In addition, he is the Director of the Center of Excellence for the Study of Health & Chronic Illnesses. Moreover, he is a Clinical Professor at The Eugene McDermott Center for Pain Management, Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Management, at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. Dr. Gatchel has been a major advocate for the biopsychosocial approach to chronic pain. This approach is now viewed as the most heuristic model for better understanding the etiology, assessment, treatment and prevention of chronic pain. Dr. Gatchel has conducted extensive evidence-based clinical research in this area, much of it continuously funded for the past 35 years by grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Department of Defense (DOD). He was also the recipient of a prestigious Senior Scientist Award from NIH. Dr. Gatchel has received numerous national and international awards associated with his research, most recently, the 2017 American Psychological Foundation’s Gold Medal Award for Life Achievement in the Application of Psychology. His major areas of clinical and research expertise includes the following: the biopsychosocial approach to the etiology, assessment, treatment and prevention of chronic stress and pain behavior; the comorbidity of physical and mental health disorders; and clinical health psychology. He has published over 433 journal articles, 144 book chapters and has authored or edited 29 books.

Gerald C. Hsu received an honorary PhD in mathematics and majored in engineering at MIT. He attended different universities over 17 years and studied seven academic disciplines, including mathematics, computer science, mechanical engineering, structural engineering, bioengineering, ocean engineering, finance & marketing. He taught himself abnormal psychology and behavior science for over eight years and established four psychotherapy centers to take care of hundreds of traumatized children and women during 2002 to 2010. He has worked in various industries, including defense, nuclear power, computer-aided-design, computer hardware engineering, software development, semiconductor design, robotics, etc. He ventured in a very successful start-up and served as the Founder, Chairman, and CEO of a public traded company in Silicon Valley during 1994 to 2002, which specialized in artificial intelligence tools for semiconductor chip design. During the period of 1999 through 2002, he was also ranked as the highest paid CEO among 15,000 chief executives in Silicon Valley. During 1991 to 2006, he suffered five cardiac episodes due to severe stress from work and unhealthy lifestyle. By 2010, after taking three kinds of diabetes medications for 20 years, he endured kidney damage, foot ulcer, bladder problems, and other severe diabetes complications. Therefore, he decided to conduct his self-study and research on chronic diseases in order to save his own life. Thus far, he has spent 20,000 hours during past 8 years to research on type 2 diabetes (T2D) and its related complications. For the first four years, during 2010 to 2013, he studied six metabolic diseases and food nutrition science. Then the next four years, during 2014 to 2018, he conducted research and developed five prediction models, including metabolism, weight, fasting plasma glucose, postprandial plasma glucose, hemoglobin A1C. Since he lacked formal training in biology and chemistry, he relied on knowledge and experiences acquired from various schools and industries. He utilized mathematics, physics, computer science, statistics, engineering modeling, signal processing, wave theory, optical physics, big data analytics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence to conduct his T2D research. He called this quantitative approach “math-physical medicine” to distinguish from the traditional “biochemical medicine.” His main focus is on preventive medicine using prediction tools. He believes that the better the prediction, the more control you have. He does not have a MD degree nor professional medical license to practice medicine. He has not received any financial assistance from any organization and relied solely on his own financial resources, which was earned from the technology sector. He has no connection or alliance with any medical institution or governmental agency except maintaining general communication with several medical doctors within the Stanford University Hospital network. He wishes to express his deep appreciation to his former professors: Professor James Andrews at University of Iowa, who built up his basic engineering foundation, and Professor Norman Jones at MIT, who taught him the right attitude and methodology to solve tough scientific problems.

Portable biosensors for the Rapid Detection of Biochemical Weapons of Terrorism, July 2012. Prof. Dimitrios Nikolelis has over 200 scientific papers in scientific journals and conferences. He is the Editor of 5 books on Biosensors (1. Biosensors for Direct Monitoring of Environmental Pollutants in Field, Springer, 1996, 2. Portable Chemical Sensors- Weapons against Bioterrorism, Springer, 2012 and 3. Portable Biosensing of Food Toxicants and Environmental Pollutants, CRC, 2013 3. 4. Biosensors for Security and Bioterrorism Applications, Springer, 2014. 5. Nanotechology and biosensors: recent advances, Elsevier, in press. He is the Editor of many scientific journals. His research is targeted on the fabrication of portable biosensors for in the field uses and he has authored a large number of scientific papers on the detection of environmental pollutants such as hydrazines, dioxins, insecticides, toxins, etc. His current interests also include the construction of novel chemical nanosensors that can be used for the rapid detection of environmental pollutants directly in the gas phase. Prof. D. P. Nikolelis group has recently utilized graphene and ZnO to develop chemical nanosensors based on polymer lipid films for species of clinical or food significance such as urea, uric acid, cholesterol, etc. In progress, there is the evaluation and validation of nanosensors that are based on stabilized polymerized lipid films supported on glass fiber filters using a dry spot test using optical methods of analysis (i.e., fluorescence) to detect environmental pollutants such as insecticides, plant hormones, toxins, hydrazines, etc.
