University of Coventry, England
Over a long career, spent mostly in the University of Birmingham and in the latter decade in the University of the West of England, Bristol (UWE), she gained extensive experience in both research and education related to health services for older people. Prior to joining UWE, she was a Senior Fellow in the Gerontological Nursing Programme at the Royal College of Nursing contributing to its policy responses. She was also a member of the Working Group set up by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) for the development of Falls Guidelines. Her research on ageing has included a number of research projects into long-term residential care, frailty and service integration. With her collaborators, their research project funding since 2001 has totalled several million pounds, including studies commissioned by the Department of Health, the Deputy Prime Minister’s Office, Skills for Care and research funded by major charities such as the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. Her academic work in care homes has also included the development and evaluation of a Care Home Learning Network in Bristol. In long-standing collaborations with other senior academics, she has been PI and co-lead in several studies related to models of improved care; workforce development; culture change; the use of technology in care; and reablement in residential care homes. She was lead author on a publication which established a foundation for the relationship between the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, Coventry University and the Graduate Nursing School, Chiba University, Japan. She also has a longstanding research interest in the health of, and support given to, war veterans.
