Dr. Mark Smith has been the CSO at APS since January of 2006. Dr. Smith has 25 years of experience in pre-clinical drug discovery and development. He also has worked in management and implementation of a preclinical testing facility within Pfizer for evaluation and screening Pharmacokinetics, Metabolism and PK/PD relationships of new chemical and biological therapeutic agents. Since joining APS, he has over twelve years working with medical devices and drug delivery systems. Dr. Smith received a BA degree from the Austin College, Sherman Texas in 1974, and his Ph.D. from the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston in 1977. Dr. Smith served as a Postdoctoral Fellow and Staff Fellow at the National Institutes of Health for 9 years. He worked in the National Institute of Arthritis, Metabolism and Digestive Diseases, and the National Cancer Institute. His primary role was in basic research in peptide and protein growth factors, early prototype biological therapeutic agents, and also in the area of clinical hematology with a focus in platelet immunology and syndromes causing acute and chronic thrombocytopenia. In 1985, Dr. Smith accepted a position as a founding owner of a contract research laboratory in Columbia, Missouri. He led a group in directed contract research in hematology and platelet function and also co-directed State of Missouri funded projects in the Epidemiology of Lung Cancer. He was the Principal Investigator and recipient of 3 SBIR research grants. In 1989, Dr. Smith accepted a position in the Central Research Laboratory of Monsanto Company in St. Louis, Missouri and was involved in basic research in the investigation of peptide growth factors as targets for cancer therapeutics. In 1991, the Central Research Laboratory from Monsanto was converted to a focus on cardiovascular pharmacology and Dr. Smith accepted a position with Searle Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of Monsanto as a Group Leader in the department of Endothelial Cell Biology. There, he directed several projects in the area of cardiovascular pharmacology and lipid metabolism. Following the acquisition of Searle Pharmaceuticals by Pharmacia Inc. in 1999, Dr. Smith was appointed to the position of Associate Director in the Medicinal Chemistry Department and led a combined in vivo testing and bioanalytical group which served as the screening laboratory for all of the Discovery Medicinal Chemistry production at the St. Louis Research Laboratories. Dr. Smith continued in this position, growing this department to a group of 15 scientists specializing in high-throughput in-life PK and PK/PD testing and bioanalysis. This group was maintained and became a key component of the St. Louis Research Laboratories upon the acquisition of the St. Louis Pharmacia Laboratories by Pfizer in 2003. Dr. Smith served with Pfizer in the role of Research Fellow until early 2006, when he left to become the Chief Scientific Officer at American Preclinical Services. As Chief Scientific Officer, Dr. Smith leads the Scientific Department at APS. Dr. Smith’s pharmaceutical discovery and development background and extensive preclinical experience in medical devices adds significant value to the APS team. In addition to leading the scientific department, Dr. Smith will function as a Study Director or Principle Investigator for GLP or non-GLP studies. Dr. Smith has published 32 peer reviewed journal articles and has presented posters and abstracts at numerous national medical conferences.
