Special needs children are identified in school through their low academic performance, which is mainly associated with reading, writing, and learning overall. Thus, this makes them subject to lacking the social and emotional behavioral elements their peers may exhibit who are successful academically. Consequently, the usual interventional for these students over the years has focused mainly on supporting their individual learning while targeting their areas of weakness. These all contribute to the failure to look more deeply into the source of the problem which may very well be social and emotional aspects of the individual child. Most often these children in our school settings are student of color (either black or other).

Today, I would like to suggest signs that may suggest a social or emotional disability or concern.

a) Children who do not smile, laugh, and are not happy in general

b) Children who do not speak by 12 months of age

c) Children who refuse to communicate with others

d) Children who withdraw and are passive

e) Children who seem depressed most of the time

f) Children who do not seem to recognize feelings in general (happy, sad, etc.)

g) Children who are always hitting or crying

h) Children who do not want to be held or touched

i) Children who are aggressive most of the time

j) Children who injure themselves

Children with social and emotional challenges can be serious ly impacted by not getting proper treatment or interventions for these disabilities. Thus, leading to serious concerns in later life. If you encounter children like this or have children or your own like this or are a teacher of such children seek interventions that can and will aid the child in better academic performance as well as strength in dealing with social and emotional concerns that they may have. If left unattended, these children may and can encounter a most difficult and challenging life that will impact all of those around them. Work to love and nurture them in all aspects of their lives to the best of your ability. Sometimes even becoming their advocate for needed interventions.

A child with special needs learning motivation and engagement can be negatively impacted, thus, contributing to their failure in many aspects of society. These children are less likely to show emotions or expressions of emotion while exhibiting behavioral difficulties with others. Thus, negatively impacting the learning motivation and engagement of students with learning disabilities [1]. Social, emotional and behavioral difficulties students with learning challenges seem to be less able to recognize emotions such as anger, fear, happy, and embarrassment [2]. Thus, showing more difficulties in correctly interpreting social situations and in dealing with behavioral consequences or actions [3]. Furthermore, they show fewer and less ability to manage conflicts compared with peers without learning disabilities, especially in situations that require the ability to understand social and emotional situations.
